This Heart Grieves

(Song written last night, April 28, about Betsy Smith, who has shuffled off this mortal coil, as it were)

The 26th of April/that's a night I won't forget/
Around the stroke of midnight/'heard that I had lost a friend/
something 'bout a semi-trailer highway accident/
that van became a chariot that took her to heaven/

Oh oh/and this heart grieves/

Found her picture on the web/the tragic news as well/
But 300 miles away/makes it not seem so real/
Yet once again I question God/like I've the right to ask/
While thoughts of other losses cause/their sadness to come back/

This heaviness is hard/and this heart grieves/
With every thought of loss/this heart grieves/

Initial inclination was to run and cry and scream/
but I also had a million thoughts that paralyzed me/
"Who's the victim of this night/if not those left behind?"/
"Then why do I wanna cry for her/though she's not the one crying?"/

Oh But/ Jesus wept/though He knew/His friend would rise again/

It's times like these/we're forced to take a step away/
to really see/the picture God is trying to paint/
It's times like these/we realize not that we've become/
helpless/but that we were helpless all along/

By this time I've realized/a reason why we mourn/
for our loved ones who know Christ/those who've been reborn/
We cry 'cause the light of Christ through them has left this world/
and we grieve for those now separated from that precious girl/

This heaviness is hard/and this heart grieves/
With every thought of loss/this heart grieves/
We've a living hope/we believe/
This song goes out to you right now/if your heart grieves/
